THE JUSTICE WE DESIRE CAN ONLY BE PRODUCT OF A SHARED EFFORT, A JOINT STRUGGLE TO MAKE THE IDEALS AND VALUES WHICH UNITE US A REALITY: CHIEF JUSTICE ARTURO ZALDÍVAR

Opening the First Preparatory Meeting for the XXI edition of the Ibero-American Judicial Summit, Chief Justice Arturo Zaldívar stated that poverty, violence, hunger, and structural discrimination have no borders. “The justice we desire can only be product of a shared effort, a joint struggle to make the ideals and values which unite us a reality.”

“The countries that we integrate are joined by a deep conviction about the equal dignity of all people, and a calling for the defense and development of human rights. We are joined by an honest desire to change reality: to build freer societies with greater social justice, to claim the rights of those who are most vulnerable, and to consolidate robust and sensitive institutions, capable of transforming people’s lives”, he said.

During the event, developed under the theme “For an independent and effective judicial career”, the President of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Federal Judiciary Council stressed that the dialogue, exchange of ideas, and commitments which result from this work should be useful tools to provide justice that contributes to reverse the historical inequalities that hurt so many people and communities in our region.

Magistrate Elvia Barrios Alvarado, President of the Judicial Branch and of the Supreme Court of Justice of Peru and Secretary pro tempore of the Ibero-American Judicial Summit, hoped that at the end of this week solid foundations that allow building firm lines of action could be laid, in order to consolidate an independent and effective judicial career.

Meanwhile, Justice John Pérez Brignani, President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and Permanent Secretary of the Ibero-American Judicial Summit, pointed out that the Latin American judicial powers should act in coordination, not only by sharing experiences and resources, but also by generating an area of defense of the judicial function.

On her part, Justice Yasmín Esquivel Mossa emphasized the importance of a judicial career committed to equal opportunities for vulnerable groups and highlighted that women’s inclusion is essential in the integration of the judicial powers.

Justice Alberto Pérez Dayán stressed that an independent and effective judicial career is one of the foundations and strengths of the judicial powers and, depending on its regulations, he said, it is the necessary instrument to guarantee equal opportunities.

With the purpose of strengthening the cooperation, agreement, and exchange of experiences and good practices between Judicial Branches, the First Preparatory Meeting for the XXI edition of the Ibero-American Judicial Summit will take place in Mexico City, from April 26-28th, prior to the next Plenary Assembly which will be held in Peru in 2023.
